I started my career thinking I'd only work for big companies forever. Then I realized small businesses were getting terrible HR advice - either overly complicated enterprise solutions or dangerously simplified "just wing it" approaches.

Turns out there's a sweet spot between "corporate policy manual the size of a phone book" and "let's just figure it out as we go." That's where I live now.

These days, I spend my time translating California's ever-changing employment laws into actual English for business owners who have better things to do than memorize labor codes.

My Philosophy.

Being compliant doesn’t mean being boring. You can follow CA employment law and still run a business that feels like you - whether that’s laid-back and creative or structured and professional.

I’ve seen too many small business owners choose between “legally safe” and “authentically us.” That’s a false choice. Good HR strategy preserves your company personality while keeping you out of trouble.

Also, if HR can’t explain it in normal human words, they probably don’t understand it well enough themselves.
